08:58 am - Monique Ortiz
I love that the world can still contain such powerful surprises for me as the music of Monique Ortiz.

Listen to her music Here.
...or Here.

A long interview with her, intercut with music, is Here.

BUY this woman's stuff.

03:20 pm - Kennedys and Gracchi

Who will stand as the Tribune for the people?
The brothers Gracchus stand.

Where in the republic are the brothers now?
In the River Tiber, citizen, in the Tiber.

The lion rose in the Senate to hold the line.
Light has failed in the highest tower in the wall.

07:20 am - August 26

I moved to New York City five years ago today.

It was an easier transition than I'd imagined. I had lived in another large international city with a subway for a year as a kid, which helped. But it was really Elizabeth who made the settling in here such a relaxed and welcoming time, finding me a drawing table, making room for me in an apartment that was really too small already. Our favorite places in the city together were established in those first weeks and months here and those places have become a part of me.

A few years ago I was taking a week off and someone asked me where I was going on vacation. I said, "Are you kidding? Nowhere. I'm from Oregon. New York City is where I would go and I live here now."

09:28 am - my new favorite Wyeth
This is my new favorite NC Wyeth painting.

Um, not that it is newly mine, it is currently thankfully owned by the Brandywine Museum, but is now my favorite. It replaces my former favorite (also there), whose status has now been relegated to close-second.

10:44 pm - Underground is surfacing
My good friend, artist Steve Lieber, and his wife Sara just had their home burglarized. Laptops stolen. While there is no good time for a home invasion, it's worse now as this is just the moment for the big push to promote Steve's new book, UNDERGROUND.

UNDERGROUND is a five issue color series beginning in September from IMAGE COMICS. Steve, with writer Jeff Parker and colorist Ron Chan have produced a phenomenal work in their first substantial collaboration.

But you don't have to take my word for how good it is. You can have a look at the preview HERE where there are five pages in color and even the entire first issue in Black and White.

Order it. Tell your friends to.
32 PAGES / FC $3.50
Diamond Gem of the Month. Solicited in the July Previews, page 132.
In stores September 23rd, 2009. Order code: JUL090341

08:32 pm - Life After Black
"Is that some measure of a man's worth? To drag what's best in him out into the street so every average slob with some pretense to taste can poke it with a stick?"

"Maybe. Maybe it is."

If that is a measure of a man's worth, then Barron Storey has proven his beyond doubt or measure, far surpassing in this even the limited few American artists who might be called his peers.

At the Society of Illustrators gallery space, Storey has put his personal sketchbook/ journals on display for any average slobs to see, and even to page through with their own hands. Spanning 30 years, each one of these books is a humbling marvel.

Go. The experience will cost you nothing but time and your preconceptions

03:04 pm - Artbooks of 2008
One of my numerous defects of character is a proclivity for art books. I seem to acquire more every year. My financial discipline in a bookstore seems weakest when confronted with a new monograph or anthology of artists I admire.

Here are a few of the acquisitions from 2008: )

Other books I'll be looking to pick up this year are the IDW annual Swallow5, the Massive Black collection Six More Vodka, the Dave Stevens' book Brush with Passion. And I hear there are a couple in the works from Abrams including Harvey Kurtzman and Jamie Hernandez.

Some addictions are only truly burdensome when you move....

For the Yankees and the Mets, pitchers and catchers report to Spring Training today.

In a week or two, position players will arrive.

What are the last two words of the National Anthem? 'Play Ball!'

02:44 am - philosophy-judo
An underlying motive for some creative people may be subconscious fear that the entire world is trying to to eliminate them... with indifference. Creativity, from that perspective, would be essentially an existential defense-mechanism.

hmmmmmmm...

03:15 pm - how close they got

"Send us your ambassadors; and thus shall we judge whether you wish to be
at peace with us or at war... if you make war on us, the Everlasting God,
who makes easy what was difficult and makes near what was far, knows
that we know what our power is."

02:20 pm - Senator Caroline Kennedy of New York
I woke this morning to the news that possibly Caroline Kennedy will be appointed by NY Governor Paterson to replace Hillary Clinton as the next Senator from the State of New York.

If she accepts the appointment, she would ensure a continuing presence of the Kennedys in the US Senate. Considering her family history of public service in the face of tragedy and loss, her courage is of the stuff that humbles.
With Sen Edward Kennedy entering into likely his last congressional session, Caroline's ascension would feel a little like a flag of my homeland going up over a fort we'd thought lost to the enemy.

A trip back to Portland starts tomorrow. But work goes on. Being away from Deep Six is debilitating to the productivity, but there is hope. Periscope in Portland is the largest comics-studio in the U.S. The picture below shows one corner of one of the rooms of their massive setup, and about two-thirds of their members. Just look at those faces. A couple-three days working around these people and all the bigcity cynicism I've acquired may drain away entirely.

09:38 am - 11/11

Veteran's Day was instituted after World War I. I knew a WWI vet once, but the last of those old soldiers died this year. Most of the vets I knew growing up had been in WWII. If you see someone today who is apparently in their eighties, you might hear some real stories if you politely ask them where they were during 'the War.'

War is an exteme to which we should go ONLY when the issue is that important and no other option is left us. But it is a voluntary hell that citizens travel to in defense of their nation, with the possibility of never returning to the life they are fighting to preserve.

While the modern wars are not ones that are affecting U.S. domestic life the way World War II did, to those who are engaged in it, the sacrifices are as great as ever.

01:35 pm - Now we will roar.
Alice Walker's recent open letter to Obama reminded me of an old quote.

For others do I wait... for higher ones, stronger ones, more triumphant ones, merrier ones, for such as are built squarely in body and soul: laughing lions must come.
– Friedrich Nietzsche

"We are the ones we have been waiting for." –AW

11:59 am - humility in power
"Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike..."
"The work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."

It feels this morning as though we are just a little closer to the nation we were promised in the fourth grade. This is not the end. This is not the Promised Land. The problems we still face are herculean. But it just may be the end of the beginning.

05:40 pm - Sidetable

It's been a while since I've made any furniture. This little sidetable stands only about 18" high. Just enough for some books and a drink next to the easychair. No screws or nails. Strictly red oak, glued and pegged. 150 years from now someone will buy it at a garage sale and scrape off 6 layers of paint and find it much like this...

I'm thinking of making a kitchen table next. Maybe with some tile.

11:44 pm - wisdom in the mystery
If you rearrange the letters in 'accepting truth', you get 'cutting the crap.'

Like it.

'Accepting truth' also anagrams to 'catch urgent tip'
HA!
